Social Anxiety Skills Group

for Young Adults in Dallas

A 3-week (twice weekly) CBT workshop for young adults

This small, structured group is designed for young adults (ages 19–30) who experience mild to moderate social anxiety and want practical tools to feel more comfortable speaking up, connecting with others, and navigating everyday social interactions. This in-person social anxiety group meets in Dallas, conveniently located near Addison, Farmers Branch, and Carrollton.

This group goes beyond understanding anxiety and learning new tools by providing structured opportunities to practice those skills in real-time with peers. Think of it like a minimester for social confidence—a short, focused program to jumpstart recovery.

One Important Note

If your anxiety feels severe or is accompanied by significant depression, trauma symptoms, or panic attacks, individual therapy or psychiatry may be a better starting point.

Is This Group Right for You?

Four young women sitting together at a table in a coffee shop, smiling and looking at a tablet and smartphone, with coffee cups and a computer on the table.

This group might be a fit if you:

  • rehearse what you’re going to say before speaking

  • worry people think you’re awkward or saying the wrong thing

  • avoid speaking up in meetings, classes, or group conversations

  • replay interactions afterward wondering if you sounded strange

  • feel exhausted after social situations, even when they go “fine”

  • appear confident on the outside but feel anxious internally

If several of these experiences sound familiar, social anxiety may be playing a role—and structured support can help.

The Benefits of Group for Social Anxiety

In individual therapy, I often meet smart, capable young adults who push through social situations when they have to—class presentations, work meetings, group hangouts—but at a cost. Their hearts race, their minds spiral, and afterward they feel shaky, drained, or unsure of what just happened.

Despite seeming “fine,” many describe how hard it feels to truly connect. Conversations take effort. Interactions get replayed for hours afterward. It can feel like they’re performing instead of being themselves.

Individual therapy can be incredibly helpful for understanding anxiety and learning new tools. But many people also benefit from structured opportunities to practice those skills in real social interactions with peers. This group was designed to provide that practice. Some participants attend the group while continuing to work with their individual therapist.

You can think of it as a structured exposure workshop where participants practice small social risks—like speaking up, initiating conversations, or tolerating awkward moments—in a supportive environment with peers who understand what social anxiety feels like.

I believe confidence grows through small risks, consistent support, and the safety to show up as your full self.

What You’ll Learn

This group is different from traditional process-oriented group therapy.

Instead of focusing on sharing personal histories, the emphasis is on learning and practicing practical skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Participants will practice:

  • understanding the cycle that keeps social anxiety going

  • identifying and challenging anxious predictions

  • reducing safety behaviors (like over-preparing or staying quiet)

  • speaking up in conversations

  • tolerating social discomfort

  • building confidence through repetition and feedback

Sessions include short teaching segments, guided exercises, and structured opportunities to practice social interactions in a supportive environment.

FAQs

  • I strongly recommend attending all 6 sessions to get the full benefit. This group is designed to be efficient and effective, and missing a session may mean missing key skills or practice time. If you anticipate missing more than one session, it would be best to wait for a future round of the group. For single absences, we may be able to schedule an individual make up session.

  • You’ll never be forced to speak or share more than you’re comfortable with. We use gradual, supportive exercises so you can build confidence step by step. That said, this is an active group—not a lecture—so we encourage participation to help you get the most out of it.

  • Nope. This group is skills-focused. You’re welcome to share insights and experiences as you feel comfortable, but our main goal is to help you practice tools you can use right away in your daily life.

  • I plan to keep the group small with 3-4 participants. From experience, this size is ideal for working on social anxiety. It creates a more comfortable, low-pressure environment while still giving you the opportunity to practice and build confidence. It also allows me to tailor the group more closely to each person.

  • The group meets twice a week for 3 weeks (6 sessions total), and each session is 60 minutes. You’ll also be encouraged to complete brief “social experiments” between sessions—like trying a conversation starter or speaking up in a small group—to help you apply what you’re learning outside of group.

  • The group is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles and strategies. CBT is the most researched and effective treatment for social anxiety. CBT focuses on interrupting the factors maintaining social anxiety, such as anxious thoughts, avoidance and safety behaviors, to reduce anxiety and improve functioning.

  • Many of our group members have worked with therapists or learned about cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). But understanding the concepts is different from putting them into action—especially in social situations with peers. This group gives you the chance to practice what you’ve learned in a supportive setting, alongside peers who get it. You’ll build confidence not just by thinking differently, but by doing things differently—with guidance, feedback, and structure from two experienced psychologists.

  • We accept HSA, FSA, or credit/debit card for payment. We are considered an out-of-network treatment provider. If you would like to use your insurance benefits, please call your health insurance plan and ask how much they reimburse for out-of-network mental health treatment for social anxiety. You will need to pay upfront, but they may be able to reimburse you 30-70% after your deductible is met.

  • If we have availability, we’re happy to work with you individually, either alongside the group or as a standalone option. Your information will remain confidential, and joining the group is never required.

Some participants find it helpful to receive individual support before, during, or after the group to deepen their progress. We also have trusted referral partners we can connect you with.
